Truly a masterwork of dark humor and creative game play.YES NOthe end of this section and read some of the FAQs. It was not a game for everyone, true, but I can still remember seeing the characters chasing the chickens in the hatchery and dropping in a few chickens on the starving hero in the torture chamber. DK was bold in it's concept, well executed, the game play model was fun and challenging, it could be played without a lot of hint books and impossible to solve on your own puzzles, (to sell the hint books) and the characters were interesting. Go here, get a mission of some kind, go kill things, go back for reward. When the industry was new everything was very open there was a lot of room for creative and new ideas and game play models.

I have been playing games on one computer or another since the very early days of the old Atari/Commodore systems. What Dungeon Keeper had is something that is severely lacking in games today, and that is a unique approach. What was and is great about Dungeon Keeper has been pretty well laid out here by others, all I can add is that I agree with nearly every reason stated but want to add that the art style was also a very appealing part of the game. This character was delivered through excellent and extremely memorable sound effects and voice narrating, art design and animation. Buried in that also was tonnes of player choices and strategy, and very well designed core strategy mechanics.Īll this was enhanced by a very unique and appealing mix of evil, silly and funny - One of the best I have ever experienced in fact. It delivered a very good combination of overall control and automation - creatures were automated but so so much was still left to the player that wasn't mindless micro-managing. I think that has been the biggest blunder for games trying to copy Dungeon Keeper - Being able to simply ENJOY what you were watching on the screen and what was occurring in your dungeon meant boat-loads to how replayable the game was and enjoying everything the game had to offer for a greater amount of time. The character and creature AI also made it amazingly satisfying to simply watch whats happening in your dungeon. For example, you can control a minion or creature and do as you please, without having to worry highly about whats happening in the rest of the dungeon since to some extent the creatures take it upon themselves to do what you want them to do, and in some cases implemented by assigning creatures to a guard-room.

The result of that was being able to focus on other things and specifically, what YOU FOUND FUN. This automated creature design also removed heaps of micro-managing from the game. Every creature had a certain character to it that made that creature interesting. Then you watch your dungeon live and breath, with creatures living in your dungeon that are doing their own thing. This kind of immersion is amazingly addictive. You don't just build a dungeon, you build YOUR dungeon. The difference between Dungeon Keeper and other games that made Dungeon Keeper fun? One of the main concept behind Dungeon Keeper? The ability to build your own dungeon and lord over it.
